YTB Does Not Make Hanau Massacre Forgotten

Perşembe, Şubat 20, 2025

On the anniversary of the racist terrorist attack in Hanau, a commemoration program was organized by YTB in order not to forget the citizens who lost their lives in the attack and to raise awareness about the racist attacks in Europe.

On the fifth anniversary of the racist attack in Hanau, Germany, on February 19, 2020, in which 9 people lost their lives, the play "Empty Frame" was shown at Akün Stage in cooperation with the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB) and Theater Frankfurt to commemorate the martyrs of Hanau. The commemoration program, which was organized to raise awareness about racist attacks in Europe, started with a photo exhibition and a short film screening. Officials from the German Embassy in Ankara, international students studying in our country and many citizens attended the program. After the game, protocol speeches were made.

Speaking at the program, YTB Vice President Abdulhadi Turus noted that, as the Presidency, they will continue to support citizens living all over the world. Stating that the staged play reveals a strong narrative in which everyone can find a piece of themselves, Turus said, “Unfortunately, we lost 9 lives as a result of the racist attacks in Hanau on February 19, 2020. We all met here today to keep their memories alive and to say no to racism through their stories. The play we just watched together showed us our forgotten values and what we have turned our backs on, especially for our diaspora living in Europe, especially in Germany. 'Empty Frame' has revealed a powerful narrative in which we can all find a piece of ourselves. "As YTB has always stated, we will continue to be there wherever we have a citizen," he said.

Kâmil Kellecioğlu, Director of the Play and General Art Director of Theater Frankfurt, said that the frames of those who lost their lives in the racist attack in Hanau exactly 5 years ago are no longer empty and said: "Thank you very much for not leaving us alone on this snowy Ankara night. Art tells people about people; It is the strongest bridge that connects us to each other. We bring Turkish theater together with Turkish and German art lovers. We know that theater is not just a stage. With a team of 20 people, we continue to produce in the light of art in Frankfurt and bring theater to wider audiences in Europe. We told a story here tonight. However, some stories do not stay on the stage... The name of our game: Empty Frame. Because what should be inside is not there. "Today, the frames of those who lost their lives in the racist attack in Hanau exactly 5 years ago are now empty."

The commemoration program ended after the gift presentation and group photo taking.
