Developed by YTB Publications to mark the 60th anniversary of the Türkiye–Netherlands Labor Agreement and to honor the historical trajectory of the Dutch-Turkish community on the European continent, the “Dutch Turkish Diaspora Atlas” is now available in both English and Turkish.
The Netherlands, to which nearly half a million Turkish nationals have migrated since 1964 pursuant to the labor agreement concluded between the Netherlands and Türkiye, represents a significant focus of YTB’s diaspora-oriented activities as the third-largest host country for Turkish migrants following Germany and France.
Within YTB’s publications addressing the Turkish diaspora, the Dutch Turkish Diaspora Atlas, part of a specialized series of diaspora atlases, centers on the history of the Dutch-Turkish community. The Atlas examines the transformation of Turkish migrants in the Netherlands from guest workers to a diaspora subsequent to the labor agreement concluded between Türkiye and the Netherlands on August 19, 1964. In this regard, it analyzes the social, economic, cultural, and political evolution of the Dutch-Turkish community. Prepared by YTB Publications, the volume also serves as a potential catalyst for future development of the Turkish diaspora in the Netherlands.
The volume further explores how official relations between Türkiye and the Netherlands, extending over 400 years, have acquired a new dimension, particularly through the presence of the Dutch-Turkish community, which has linked the two countries over the past sixty years following the labor agreement. It further examines how diaspora communities, in their processes of self-construction, have influenced the trajectories and connections between their countries of origin and countries of residence.
This narrative, which commenced centuries ago with the shipment of tulip bulbs from the Ottoman Empire to the Netherlands, continues to flourish today through the Dutch-Turkish diaspora which integrates this historical heritage within its identity. The diaspora is examined through articles and interviews by subject matter experts organized under 14 thematic sections. The volume comprehensively presents the historical developments of the Dutch Turkish diaspora from the first generation to the present day and its evolving conditions. Each chapter incorporates images and documents assembled specifically for this volume from Dutch and Turkish archives in commemoration of the 60th anniversary or acquired from the personal archives of community members.
