Research on Turks Living in Europe (AYTA)
Today, diasporas are valued by governments both in their homelands and in the countries they live in, and they play an active role in international relations due to social developments. In this context, the historical formation of the Turkish diaspora began with migration to America in the 1800s; in the 1960s, it took shape in a wide area from those who migrated to Europe, especially Germany, to Turks in the Balkans. Today, a large part of the Turkish diaspora consists of Turkish citizens who went abroad and blue card holders who have renounced their citizenship with permission. Whether or not this group has citizenship rights in the countries they live in today, they are involved in all processes of social life, from production to administration.
Increasing the social and economic status of the Turkish diaspora in the countries they reside in; protecting their identity and culture, and preserving their sense of belonging to Türkiye are among the goals determined as priorities by our Presidency. Achieving these goals is of great importance by conducting multi-dimensional data-based studies by examining every aspect of the Turkish diaspora.
In addition to establishing strong and sustainable relations with their homelands, it is an important policy goal for our Presidency that the diaspora contribute to the development of the society in the countries where they are located in accordance with democratic values. In this context, this field research, carried out in August and September 2022, examined the status of diaspora members in 8 European countries in maintaining their ties with their homeland Türkiye, their active participation in democratic processes in Türkiye, and their active citizenship in the societies they live in.
In this context, this field research conducted with our citizens who came to Türkiye to spend their summer holidays aims to make comparisons with the research to be conducted in the long term and to establish a solid foundation. The results of this research can be placed in a productive framework with the contribution of other studies to be conducted and with the understanding of the periodic conditions.
