International Student Mobility
Our country has recently experienced a great change in the field of higher education in terms of the number of universities, research centers, academicians and internationalization.
In the last 10 years, the number of international students studying in our higher education institutions has increased by 75 percent and according to current numbers, our country has become one of the countries hosting the highest number of international students in the world with approximately 148 thousand international students, 25 thousand of which are scholarship students.
Our country aims to host 200 thousand international students by 2023.
Similarly, the number of students studying abroad is increasing rapidly in the world.
While the number of students studying in a country other than their own was only 800 thousand in 1975, this number reached 4.5 million in 2010. This number, which has reached 7.5 million today, is estimated to reach 20 million by 2030.
On the other hand, the number of students enrolled in a higher education program all over the world is also increasing rapidly. In 2009, the number of students enrolled in any higher education institution worldwide was 170 million, while this number is estimated to reach 262 million in 2025.
There was a time when education was seen as a way for each country to raise human resources in line with its national needs.
Today, however, to the extent that the problems of our world have gained a universal dimension that concerns all humanity, the aim of education is to raise generations that can find common solutions to the problems of all humanity.
In this respect, it can be said that individuals from different countries and cultures who come together and receive international education outside their countries of origin have a unique experience and gain different achievements.
From the point of view of countries, many countries today have made international student mobility a competitive issue and are trying to provide benefits in many areas such as economic, cultural, academic, etc. through international education.
Türkiye considers its actions in this field as a very important opportunity in terms of mutual relations to be established with other countries.
Türkiye's internationalization efforts in higher education are basically based on the following four principles:
• Academic development and interaction
• Economic development and solidarity
• Social and cultural interaction
• Improving political and diplomatic relations
